Temporary Closure of the "Swatchway" Channel

Published 13:59 on 14 Oct 2025
As advised by the PLA Notice to Mariners. See also accompanying chartlet.
Mariners are advised that, due to ongoing works as part of the Neuconnect Nearshore Cable Works, the Swatchway Channel (adjacent to the western side of entrance to the River Medway) is closed to navigation for vessels with a draught in excess of 2 metres. No vessel with a draught exceeding 2 metres is permitted to pass south of the guard vessel ISLA B.
Works are being undertaken by barge BD6074 which may be anchored with a spread of cables and anchors extending around her position. Mariners are advised to keep well clear of her and her anchors, cables and gear. Vessels JENNY D, EFFY D and MOR-KI-TAROW and ISLA B may also be in attendance.
Vessels with a draught of less than 2 metres may use the Swatchway but must first contact London VTS (VHF 68) and Medway VTS (VHF 74).
Vessels should avoid crossing the marked anchor cables and navigate with caution.
