In November 2023, Sue Hancock, Benfleet Yacht Clubs former Secretary and Race Officer, was presented with an RYA "life-time commitment" award for her many years of dedicated service to the club. The award was presented by Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal who is the president of the RYA, at a ceremony held in the grade 2 listed conference centre "One Great George Street" in London.

Sue has performed the roles of both Honorary Secretary and Race Officer for over 26 years. In addition to these roles, Sue has acted as Chief Catering Officer, for a similar length of time at the annual BYC Cadet Sail Training week. As Cadet Week Chief Catering Officer, each year Sue has lead a team of helpers providing snacks, lunches and refreshments throughout the daytime plus a full meal at the end of each day for up to 50 Cadets and 70 adult helpers.

After 26+ years in the role, Sue stood down as Secretary at the December 2023 Annual General Meeting but will continue as Race Officer.
